Mathew Blagden Hale was born in Gloucester, England in 1811 and was ordained in the Church of England in 1837. He came to Australia in 1847 with Augustus Short, Bishop of Adelaide, and was subsequently appointed the first Bishop of Western Australia in 1857. Sir Richard Spencer was Government Resident in Albany 1833-1839. He bought Strawberry Hill Farm at Albany, and developed a farm also at Hay River, north west of Albany. His wife, Lady Anne Warden Spencer (nee Liddon), carried on after the tragic death of her husband and two sons (Hugh Seymour and Horatio William) in 1839-1840. Wollaston, John Ramsden, 1791-1856

Wollaston arrived in Western Australia in 1841 with his wife, three of his five sons and two daughters. They went to Port Leschenault and bought land at Picton where the family built a house and worked a small farm. The church was built in 1848 and Wollaston was appointed chaplain for the area.
